Equipment and certification

Special aircrew and aircraft certification is required. DME is required. Use QNH and IMS ILS/DME, 109.7 MHz, with a 160° inbound course and 3° glidepath. This is the low-visibility continuation of ILS-Z runway 16. Its DME requirement applies even though the standard ILS-Z sheet permits DME or GNSS.

Approach and glidepath

Enter at BELTA at or above 3,000 ft, 11.8 NM IMS DME / 11.6 NM from the threshold. Follow 160°. The glidepath passes AVMEL at 2,230 ft, 5.7 NM IMS DME / 5.5 NM from the threshold. Threshold elevation is 432 ft and reference datum height is 50 ft.

Three-degree glidepath checks

Every distance in this table is to IMS DME.

Holding and speeds

Hold at BELTA, inbound 160°, with left turns, one-minute legs, a minimum altitude of 4,000 ft and a 17 NM DME limit. The entry diagram labels 050°, 230° and 340°. Maximum indicated airspeed at BELTA is 185 kt. ATC approach-speed ranges are 160–185 kt at BELTA and 150–160 kt at 5 NM from the threshold. Aircraft may be radar-vectored to final approach, or join the procedure from a STAR before the final approach fix.

Certified approach minima

These rows apply to aircraft categories A, B, C and D/Dₗ, subject to the required aircrew and aircraft certification. RVR is runway visual range, in metres. The Category IIIb row does not print a decision altitude or radio-altimeter value; do not infer a value from the blank fields.

Alternate minima

The chart prints special alternate minima of 700 ft / 2.5 km without defining their applicability conditions. Those conditions remain to be added to this draft.

Missed approach

Track 160° and climb to 4,000 ft, or as directed by ATC.

Frequencies

All frequencies are MHz.

Sector altitudes and map reference

The 10 NM minimum sector altitude is 3,300 ft. The 25 NM MSA, centred on ML VOR, is 4,500 ft in the northern sector and 3,700 ft in the southern sector. Boundaries are labelled R-260° on the west side and R-080° on the east side. Bearings are magnetic, with 12° east variation. Elevations are feet above mean sea level. The map scale is 1:500,000, with a 0–5 NM scale bar. It covers labelled grid lines 37°30′–37°40′ S and 144°40′–145°00′ E. YMEN is Essendon Airport, south-east of Melbourne. The map shows ARBEY arrivals from the north and BOOIN, BOYSE, RAZZI and ALAXO arrivals from the east. It prints these terrain and obstacle elevations, in feet: 2,365; 2,293; 2,195; 1,604; 1,598; 1,600; 1,468; 949; 1,021; 830; 655; 920; 687; 1,224; 1,171; 906; 948; 892; 691; 1,007; 935; 808; 706; 775; 526; 564; 552; 573; 1,041; 1,096.
