# RNP approach to Sydney runway 16L

> RNP approach to Sydney runway 16L.

## Set up the approach

This is an **RNP APCH** procedure. Use **QNH**. For **LNAV/VNAV**, **YSSY QNH and temperature are required**; the procedure temperature range is **0°C to +61°C**.

The final approach course is **155°**. Distances in the profile are to **SSYNM**, the missed approach point at the runway threshold.

## Route and altitude restrictions

| Point or segment | Distance to SSYNM | Restriction or instruction |
| - | - | - |
| TONUX, initial approach fix | 14.3 NM | At or above 4,000 ft; track 155° to SSYNI, a 6.5 NM leg |
| TONUX to SSYNI | Ends at 7.8 NM | Minimum altitude 2,500 ft |
| SSYNI, intermediate fix | 7.8 NM | Path altitude 2,560 ft; continue 155° to SSYNF, a 2 NM leg |
| SSYNI to SSYNF | Ends at 5.8 NM | Minimum altitude 1,800 ft |
| SSYNF, final approach fix | 5.8 NM | Path altitude 1,930 ft; track 155° to SSYNM, a 5.8 NM leg |
| SSYNF to the 4.6 NM point | Ends at 4.6 NM | Minimum altitude 1,500 ft; path altitude at the end is 1,530 ft |
| 4.6 NM point to the 3 NM point | Ends at 3 NM | Minimum altitude 1,000 ft; path altitude at the end is 1,020 ft |
| After the 3 NM point | To SSYNM | Observe the selected LNAV/VNAV or LNAV minimum |

## Speeds and holding

Maximum initial indicated airspeed is **210 kt**. The ATC approach speed ranges are **160–185 kt at 10 NM from touchdown** and **150–160 kt at 5 NM**. Holding is as directed by ATC. On the missed approach, the maximum is **220 kt until SSYNH**.

## Descent checks

These are altitudes on the **3° path**. The distance reference changes at **SSYNF**: read the reference column before using a distance. Threshold crossing height is **50 ft**.

| Distance reference | Distance or position | Path altitude |
| - | - | - |
| At SSYNI | Intermediate fix | 2,560 ft |
| To SSYNF | 1 NM | 2,240 ft |
| At SSYNF | Final approach fix | 1,930 ft |
| To SSYNM | 4.6 NM | 1,530 ft |
| To SSYNM | 3 NM | 1,020 ft |
| To SSYNM | 2 NM | 700 ft |
| To SSYNM | 1.4 NM | 500 ft |
| To SSYNM | 1 NM | 380 ft |

## Straight-in minima

These minima apply to categories **A, B, C and D**. Published heights are retained separately from altitudes.

| Approach | Minimum altitude | Published height | Visibility |
| - | - | - | - |
| LNAV/VNAV | Decision altitude 380 ft | 364 ft | 1.1 km |
| LNAV | Minimum descent altitude 500 ft | 479 ft | 1.8 km |

## Missed approach

Track **155°**. At **600 ft**, turn **left**, direct to **SSYNH**, then track **125°**. Climb to **3,000 ft**, or as directed by ATC. Keep indicated airspeed at or below **220 kt until SSYNH**.

SSYNH is the missed approach holding fix. The profile places it **7 NM beyond SSYNM** and the map labels the outbound leg **7 NM**.

## Circling and alternate minima

**Circling is not authorized.**

| Category | Alternate ceiling | Alternate visibility |
| - | - | - |
| A and B | 1,269 ft | 4.4 km |
| C | 1,479 ft | 6.0 km |
| D | 1,479 ft | 7.0 km |

## Frequencies

All frequencies are MHz.

| Service | Frequency |
| - | - |
| ATIS | 118.55 |
| Approach north | 124.4 |
| Approach south | 128.3 |
| Director east | 125.3 |
| Director west | 126.1 |
| Tower | 124.7 |
| Surface movement east of runway 16R/34L | 121.7 |
| Surface movement west of runway 16R/34L | 126.5 |

## Terrain and chart conventions

Use **QNH**. Bearings are magnetic, with **13° east** variation. Altitudes and elevations are feet above mean sea level unless identified as radio-altimeter readings or heights. The map scale is **1:500,000**. Aerodrome elevation is **21 ft**; runway 16L threshold elevation is **16 ft**.

The **25 NM minimum sector altitude is 2,700 ft** and the **10 NM minimum sector altitude is 2,100 ft**, centred on the **YSSY aerodrome reference point**.

The map labels obstacle and spot elevations of **160, 190, 250, 255, 259, 266, 299, 306, 320, 385, 389, 421, 430, 545, 641, 659, 677, 684, 725, 755, 862, 867, 887, 894, 1,001, 1,074 and 1,085 ft**. Their geographic placement still requires a complete text description.

Nearby aerodromes **YSBK** and **YFIW** are labelled on the map.

Chart **SSYGN01-187**, revised **9 July 2026**, from the fixed publication cycle effective **3 September 2026**.
