# Melbourne VOR runway 09

> Melbourne VOR runway 09.

## Navigation setup and speed limits

Use **QNH** and **ML VOR/DME, 114.1 MHz**. DME is required; **GNSS may be used instead of DME with ML VOR as the reference waypoint**. Holding is **as advised by ATC**.

Maximum indicated airspeed at **NAOMI is 185 kt**. The chart lists ATC approach-speed ranges of **160–185 kt at NAOMI** and **150–160 kt at 5 NM from the threshold**. Aircraft may be **radar-vectored to an initial approach fix**.

## Initial approach and final course

The chart provides two initial fixes on the **10 NM ML DME arc**:

| Initial fix | Radial from ML | Initial altitude | Arc altitude | Lead radial for final |
| - | - | - | - | - |
| LURGU | R-300° | 4,000 ft | 3,000 ft | R-271° |
| MISCH | R-220° | 3,000 ft | 3,000 ft | R-248° |

From LURGU, follow the arc towards the south; from MISCH, follow it towards the north. Intercept the **080° inbound final course via NAOMI**. The diagram also labels **2,100 ft** on the curved connections from the lead radials towards final; retain the profile’s distance-based step-down limits below.

### Descent profile

All distances are **to ML DME**, not to the threshold. The profile gives a **3° descent path**.

| Position or interval | Published altitude or minimum |
| - | - |
| 10 NM initial arc / before 8 NM | 3,000 ft, after the 4,000 ft LURGU initial requirement |
| 8 NM to 6 NM | 2,100 ft minimum |
| 6 NM to 4 NM | 1,800 ft minimum |
| From 4 NM before descent to MDA | 1,400 ft minimum |
| Missed-approach point | 1.5 NM from ML DME |

Runway 09 threshold elevation is **395 ft**. The source does not provide a threshold-distance conversion for every DME check.

### Three-degree descent checks

| Distance to ML DME | Path altitude |
| - | - |
| 9 NM | 3,000 ft |
| 8 NM | 2,690 ft |
| 7 NM | 2,370 ft |
| 6 NM | 2,050 ft |
| 5 NM | 1,740 ft |
| 4 NM | 1,420 ft |
| 3 NM | 1,100 ft |
| 2.5 NM | 950 ft |

## Straight-in minimum

For categories **A–D**, the VOR/DME minimum descent altitude is **950 ft above mean sea level**, a **555 ft height above threshold**, with **3.2 km visibility**. **Special alternate minima are not applicable.**

## Missed approach

At the missed-approach point, track **080°** and **climb to 4,000 ft, or as directed by ATC**.

## Circling and alternate minima

Circling altitudes are feet above mean sea level; the accompanying heights are above the **434 ft aerodrome elevation**. Visibility is kilometres.

| Aircraft category | Circling altitude | Circling height / visibility | Alternate ceiling / visibility |
| - | - | - | - |
| A and B | 1,140 ft | 706 ft / 2.4 km | 1,206 ft / 4.4 km |
| C | 1,450 ft | 1,016 ft / 4.0 km | 1,516 ft / 6.0 km |
| D | 1,600 ft | 1,166 ft / 5.0 km | 1,666 ft / 7.0 km |

## Frequencies

All frequencies are MHz.

| Service | Frequency |
| - | - |
| ATIS | 114.1 or 118.0 |
| Approach | 132.0 |
| Tower | 120.5 |
| Surface movement | 121.7 |

## Sector altitudes and map reference

The **10 NM minimum sector altitude is 3,300 ft**. The **25 NM MSA**, centred on **ML VOR**, is **4,500 ft in the northern sector** and **3,700 ft in the southern sector**. Boundaries are labelled **R-260° on the west side** and **R-080° on the east side**.

Bearings are magnetic, with **12° east variation**. Elevations are feet above mean sea level. The map scale is **1:500,000**, with a **0–5 NM scale bar**. It covers labelled grid lines **37°30′–37°50′ S** and **144°40′–145°00′ E**. **YMEN is Essendon Airport**, south-east of Melbourne.

The map prints these terrain and obstacle elevations, in feet: **2,195; 1,598; 1,600; 1,468; 949; 1,021; 920; 687; 655; 1,224; 1,171; 1,007; 775; 935; 808; 706; 945; 691; 564; 526; 552; 573; 1,041; 772; 1,096; 657**. Their geographic positions have not yet been fully transcribed into this text.
