# Melbourne aerodrome lighting

> Melbourne aerodrome lighting.

## Runway lights and PAPI

Every runway has a **3.0° precision approach path indicator (PAPI)** with a published height of **74 ft**. The height describes the minimum eye height at the threshold for an on-path indication.

| Runway | Magnetic direction | Published lighting and visibility provisions |
| - | - | - |
| 16 | 160° | HIRL, HIAL–CAT II–III, SFL, RTZL, RCLL, RCGL, RVR |
| 34 | 340° | HIRL, RTIL, HSL, RCLL, RCGL, RVR |
| 09 | 083° | MIRL, RVR |
| 27 | 263° | MIRL, HIRL, HIAL–CAT II–III, SFL, RTZL, RCLL, RVR |

## Lighting abbreviations

| Label | Meaning |
| - | - |
| HIRL / MIRL | High- / medium-intensity runway lights |
| HIAL–CAT II–III | High-intensity approach lights for the printed Category II/III provision |
| SFL | Sequenced flashing lights |
| RTZL | Runway touchdown-zone lights |
| RCLL | Runway centreline lights |
| RCGL | Runway circling guidance lights |
| RTIL | Runway threshold identification lights |
| HSL | Hold-short lights, used with land-and-hold-short operations |
| RVR | Runway visual range provision |

## Taxiway lights and standby power

The chart lists **green taxiway centreline lights**, **stop bars**, **runway guard lights**, and **intermediate holding-point lights**.

Runway lighting is **manually operated**. Standby power changeover is **1 second during low-visibility procedures** and **15 seconds at other times**.

## Airport reference

Aerodrome elevation is **434 ft**, at **37°40′24″ S, 144°50′36″ E**. See the [aerodrome layout](https://www.narev.ai/docs/irl-gym/airports/melbourne/charts/aerodrome-layout.md) for runway dimensions and the runway 34 LAHSO landing distance. The lighting chart’s published change removes the aerodrome beacon entry.

## Frequencies

All frequencies are MHz.

| Service | Frequency |
| - | - |
| ATIS | 118.0 or 114.1 |
| Airways clearance delivery | 127.2 |
| Surface movement | 121.7 |
| Tower | 120.5 |
