# Melbourne aerodrome layout

> Melbourne aerodrome layout.

## Airport reference

Melbourne’s aerodrome reference point is **37°40′24″ S, 144°50′36″ E**, and aerodrome elevation is **434 ft**.

**Melbourne/Essendon is a separate airport, 5 NM southeast.** The source marks this nearby airport as a warning against confusion.

## Runways

| Runway pair | Physical dimensions | Surface | Threshold elevations |
| - | - | - | - |
| 16/34 | 3,657 × 60 m | Grooved | Runway 16: 432 ft; runway 34: 330 ft |
| 09/27 | 2,286 × 45 m | Grooved | Runway 09: 395 ft; runway 27: 407 ft |

For **land-and-hold-short operations (LAHSO) on runway 34**, the chart gives a landing distance available of **2,613 m from the threshold**. This is the LAHSO distance, distinct from the runway’s full physical length.

## Taxiway and apron orientation

Runway 16/34 runs north–south and crosses runway 09/27. The passenger terminal and main aprons lie east of runway 16/34, south of runway 09/27.

* **A** runs along the east side of runway 16/34; **V** is between A and the runway. **B** serves the runway 16 end, and **C** connects the northern runway area with A and V.
* **M** is at the runway 09 end; **N** is the nearby curved connector. **E** runs south of runway 09/27 and crosses runway 16/34.
* Near the runway 27 end, the map labels **D, P, Q and R**. The northern terminal apron has **S** and **T** connections.
* **F, G and U** connect the central runway-side taxiways and apron. **Y** and **J** are farther south alongside A, V and S.
* **K** serves the runway 34 end. **W** leads east to the southern apron, with branches **W1, W2, W3 and W4**. A helicopter position is shown near W3.

The control tower is west of runway 16/34, south of E. The map labels the tower/obstacle elevation **581 ft**, an obstacle **475 ft** west of the northern runway area, a **579 ft** spot elevation farther northwest, and a **450 ft** obstacle near the eastern navigation-aid area.

The map marks localizers beyond the runway 09 and 34 ends, a glidepath installation beside the northern portion of runway 16, and VOR/DME and glidepath/DME installations near runway 27.

## Runway-incursion hot spots

Two locations are enlarged on the chart:

* **C near A and V**, beside the northern end of runway 16/34. The inset shows the runway holding position on C, with V joining the C/A area.
* **E crossing runway 16/34**, south of the runway intersection. Holding positions are shown on both sides of the runway.

## Aircraft-specific ground movement

The [Boeing 747-8 restrictions](https://www.narev.ai/docs/irl-gym/airports/melbourne/charts/boeing-747-8-ground-movement.md), [A380 restrictions](https://www.narev.ai/docs/irl-gym/airports/melbourne/charts/a380-ground-movement.md), and [low-visibility routes](https://www.narev.ai/docs/irl-gym/airports/melbourne/charts/low-visibility-ground-movement.md) are separate because their permitted movements differ.

## Frequencies

All frequencies are MHz.

| Service | Frequency |
| - | - |
| ATIS | 118.0 or 114.1 |
| Airways clearance delivery | 127.2 |
| Surface movement | 121.7 |
| Tower | 120.5 |

## Map reference

Bearings are magnetic and elevations are feet above mean sea level. Magnetic variation is **12° east**. The map scale is **1:40,000**, with a **0–800 m** scale bar. Grid labels cover **37°39′ S to 37°42′ S** and **144°49′ E to 144°52′ E**.

Chart **MMLAD01-187**, revised **9 July 2026**, from the fixed publication cycle effective **3 September 2026**.
