# Canberra noise abatement: runway preferences

> Canberra noise abatement: runway preferences.

The Canberra noise-abatement procedures set preferred runways and flight paths. Times on this page are **local time**. Apply the [area and exceptions](https://www.narev.ai/docs/irl-gym/airports/canberra/charts/noise-abatement-area.md) together with these preferences.

## Preferred landing runways

| Local time | First preference | Second preference | Third preference |
| - | - | - | - |
| 0700–2000 | Runways 35, 17 and 30 | Runway 12 | — |
| 2000–0700 | Runway 17 | Runways 35 and 30 | Runway 12 |

The runways within a preference group share that priority; the table does not establish a separate ranking within the group.

## Preferred takeoff runways

1. Runway 35.
2. Runway 17.
3. Runways 30 and 12.

The priorities are intended to put most movements on the most preferred runway. They do **not** require the use of opposite-direction or crossing runways.

## Preferred flight paths

Aircraft are normally routed around the noise-abatement area, which covers most of Canberra and Queanbeyan. It includes **Gungahlin, North Canberra, Belconnen, South Canberra, Woden, Tuggeranong and Queanbeyan**.

Where remaining clear is impractical, the published overflight floors are:

| Aircraft | Minimum altitude over the noise-abatement area |
| - | -: |
| Jet aircraft | 7,000 ft AMSL |
| Propeller aircraft with maximum takeoff weight above 5,700 kg | 5,000 ft AMSL |

Read the [area map and exceptions](https://www.narev.ai/docs/irl-gym/airports/canberra/charts/noise-abatement-area.md), [arrival rules](https://www.narev.ai/docs/irl-gym/airports/canberra/charts/noise-abatement-arrivals.md) and [departure rules](https://www.narev.ai/docs/irl-gym/airports/canberra/charts/noise-abatement-departures.md) for the remainder of the procedure.

This is chart **SCBNA01-129**, revised **17 November 2011**, retained in the fixed publication cycle effective **3 September 2026**.
