# Pushback and engine start

## Before Start

Verify the flight-deck door, CDU display, N1 references, IAS references and Mode Control Panel for the assigned departure. Use the actual loading and applicable performance data.

Close and verify the door lock independently. Confirm that the displayed reference speeds and N1 targets are the intended values; the presence of a bug or a successful data-entry action does not establish its correctness.

**1. Flight deck door — Closed/locked**

Close the flight-deck door and verify its locked condition, not only that a close command was accepted.

**2. CDU display — Set**

Select and verify the mission-required CDU page, using displayed labels rather than assumed LSK positions.

**3. N1 bugs — Check**

Cross-check the takeoff N1 reference bugs against the applicable performance data and actual aircraft configuration.

**4. IAS bugs — Check**

Cross-check the takeoff reference-speed bugs against the applicable V1, VR and V2 performance data.

**5. MCP — Set**

Set the assigned Mode Control Panel targets and switch selections. Verify each selected target and mode separately.

## Pushback

Carry out pushback under the assigned ground-handler instructions. Maintain parking-brake coordination with the handler. A ground-call button does not establish clearance to move or a parking-brake instruction.

After pushback is complete, establish the required hydraulic-pump configuration. Completion of the pushback procedure does not establish engine-start completion. Select Engine Start for the engine-start procedure.

**1. Transponder — As needed**

Set code and mode from the mission/clearance, then verify both. Code and mode are separate requirements.

**2. Parking brake — By ground handler**

Set or release the parking brake only as instructed by the ground handler. Observe the current state and verify the requested result.

**3. Parking brake response: last word is cut off in the source screenshot. — NOTE**

Acknowledge the source note. Obtain the actual parking-brake instruction from the ground handler.

**4. After pushback: Hydraulic pumps — ON**

**Condition:** After pushback.

After pushback is complete, select the hydraulic pumps required by the applicable panel procedure ON. Verify the required switch and system indications.

## Engines Start

Start **engine 2**, then **engine 1**. Begin engine 1 start only after engine 2 is stable. Complete the applicable preceding procedures and establish the assigned start-readiness and air-supply conditions before selecting GRD.

**1. Engine 2 Stable**

Before the engine 1 start sequence, verify engine 2 stable against the assigned criteria. The stable condition applies to the entire engine 1 start sequence, including the announcement and GRD selection, even where later item text does not repeat it. The checklist supplies no numerical stability band or dwell time.

**2. Completion and Continuation**

Continue through all three pages. The source transitions connect part 1 to part 2 and part 2 to part 3; they do not override an item condition. After part 3 and the applicable readiness checks are complete, select Before Taxi, Before Taxi.

If required start indications or instructions are unavailable, do not advance through the normal sequence. Use the assigned supervisory or non-normal start procedure. This chapter does not specify hot-start, hung-start, no-lightoff, starter-limit or abnormal-start recovery actions.

**3. Engine 2 start — NOTE**

Start engine 2 first.

**4. Pack switches — OFF**

Set both pack switches OFF. Verify both switch positions before selecting engine 2 GRD.

**5. Engine 2 start sequence — Announce**

Announce engine 2 start through the assigned crew/ground communication channel before selecting GRD.

**6. Engine 2 start switch — GRD**

Select engine 2 start switch GRD. Monitor the associated engine indications.

**7. Engine 2 N2 RPM increases — Verify**

Observe successive valid engine 2 N2 indications. Verify increasing N2 before proceeding to the fuel-admission condition.

**8. Engine 2 at 25% N2: Engine 2 start lever — IDLE**

**Condition:** Engine 2 at 25% N2.

When engine 2 N2 reaches 25% during the current start, move engine 2 start lever to IDLE. Do not move the forward thrust lever to satisfy this item.

**9. Engine 2 at 56% N2: Engine 2 start switch OFF — Verify**

**Condition:** Engine 2 at 56% N2.

When engine 2 N2 reaches 56%, verify that engine 2 start switch has returned to OFF. This is a verification item; do not select OFF merely to obtain the required indication.

**10. START 2 VALVE OPEN — Extinguished**

Verify START 2 VALVE OPEN is extinguished following the engine 2 start-switch OFF verification.

**11. Starter 2 cutout — Announce**

After the preceding switch and valve indications have been verified, announce starter 2 cutout through the assigned communication channel.

**12. After engine 2 is stable: Engine 1 start — NOTE**

**Condition:** After engine 2 is stable.

Start engine 1 only after engine 2 is stable.

**13. After engine 2 is stable: Engine 1 start sequence — Announce**

**Condition:** After engine 2 is stable.

Announce engine 1 start through the assigned crew/ground communication channel before selecting GRD.

**14. Engine 1 start switch — GRD**

Select engine 1 start switch GRD. Monitor the associated engine indications.

**15. Engine 1 N2 RPM increases — Verify**

Observe successive valid engine 1 N2 indications. Verify increasing N2 before proceeding to the fuel-admission condition.

**16. Engine 1 at 25% N2: Engine 1 start lever — IDLE**

**Condition:** Engine 1 at 25% N2.

When engine 1 N2 reaches 25% during the current start, move engine 1 start lever to IDLE. Do not move the forward thrust lever to satisfy this item.

**17. Engine 1 at 56% N2: Engine 1 start switch OFF — Verify**

**Condition:** Engine 1 at 56% N2.

When engine 1 N2 reaches 56%, verify that engine 1 start switch has returned to OFF. This is a verification item; do not select OFF merely to obtain the required indication.

**18. START 1 VALVE OPEN — Extinguished**

Verify START 1 VALVE OPEN is extinguished following the engine 1 start-switch OFF verification.

**19. Starter 1 cutout — Announce**

After the preceding switch and valve indications have been verified, announce starter 1 cutout through the assigned communication channel.
