# Monitor

> Understand spending and connect it to the resources and work that produce it.

Understand which infrastructure resources produce your spending before deciding what to change. **Varne** brings infrastructure COGS into view through provider connections and billing imports in FOCUS format.

## Start Varne v0

These commands follow the v0 Docker setup. **Varne v1 is in development**; keep v0 images and configuration together.

You need Docker and Python with the `cryptography` package installed. Generate an encryption key:

```bash theme={null}
python -c "from cryptography.fernet import Fernet; print(Fernet.generate_key().decode())"
```

Replace `YOUR_GENERATED_KEY` below with the output, then start the container with persistent local storage:

```bash theme={null}
docker run -d \
  --name varne \
  -p 8000:8000 \
  -v "$(pwd)/data:/app/data" \
  -e ENCRYPTION_KEY="YOUR_GENERATED_KEY" \
  -e ENVIRONMENT="production" \
  -e DEBUG="false" \
  ghcr.io/narevai/varne:0.5.0
```

The container exposes port 8000 and stores data in your local `data` directory. Follow the deployment guide for configuration, then connect a provider to bring in billing data.
